The Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra sponsors several programs for young musicians.

Advanced orchestra is open by audition to musicians age 9 to 18 who play an orchestral instrument. Following its second year as a strings-only ensemble, the orchestra is adding brass, winds and percussion in September 2010. Repertoire is around NYSSMA level 4. Interested students are invited to audition on June 4 & 5 or Sept. 11, 2010. For audition suggestions click here. Rehearsals: Mondays, 5 - 6:30 p.m., Sept to June at the Church of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn Heights (2, 3, 4, 5, M, N, R, A, C, F subways).

Repertory string orchestra is open by audition to students age 6 to 13 who are playing violin, viola or cello at around NYSSMA level 2. For audition suggestions click here. Students must have fluency reading music from the end of Suzuki Book 1 or early Book 2. Rehearsals: Mondays, 4 - 5 p.m., Sept to June at the Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn Heights (2, 3, 4, 5, M, N, R, A, C, F subways).

Tuition is $500 a year. Need-based scholarships available.

The orchestras are directed by Kelly Howard, noted violinist and Suzuki teacher, who is also concertmaster of the grown-up BSO. A team of outstanding professional musicians provide coaching sessions at sectional rehearsals.

Summer Suzuki camp 2009


Summer camps: The BSYO is offering two summer camps, July 5 - 16, 2010, at Hannah Senesh School, 342 Smith St, Brooklyn. (F to Carroll Gardens) Both camps are directed by Ms. Howard.

BSYO Summer Strings Camp: For violins, violas, cellos and basses. 9 am - 4 pm. Two weeks of orchestra and chamber music, plus opportunities to take master classes with visiting artists. Ages 9 - 18. No audition required but students should be playing repertoire at NYSSMA level 3 or 4. Fee: $600 ($550 if paid by April 10.)

BSYO Summer Suzuki Violin Camp: For Suzuki violin students, ages 3 - 10. 9 am - 3:30 pm (or finish at 12:30 for 3-5 year olds). A parent or caregiver attends with the student. Choose one or both weeks. Fee: 2-weeks $600 ($550 if paid by April 10); 1-week $300 ($275 by April 10); mornings only: 2-weeks $400, 1 week $200.
